- The biggest news of the weak was obviously the contract extension of Ben Roethlisberger. Everyone knew that it was coming at some point, but that does not take away from its huge impact. The Steelers will have to rely on Roethlisberger and the rest of the the offense if they want any chance to return to the playoffs
- On the same day, the Steelers were able to sign free agent running back DeAngelo Williams to a two-year deal. Williams will see a decent amount of carries next season as the main backup to Le'Veon Bell. He is also expected to be the starter during Bell's suspension.
- The Steelers will host a couple of defensive backs this week. Ian Rapoport reported that former first rounder Patrick Robinson will be in for a visit and Josina Anderson found out that Sterling Moore will also be making a visit. Obviously the secondary is a major hole on the team's roster and many additions are expected by the end of the offseason.
- Before Jason Worilds decided to retire, he was reportedly seeking $50 million. The Steelers offered as much as $12 million in guaranteed money before letting Worilds know he should check out the market for his services. Obviously, God was the apparent winner of his services.
- The Steelers re-signed Arthur Moats to a 3-year, $7.5 million contract. As was discussed in the free agency breakdown article, this was not only expected but also a good move by the team.
- According to Jason La Canfora the Steelers are in search of a returner for the 2014 season. While Antonio Brown has been good as a punt returner, the kick return game has been less than stellar the last few years. Additionally, every punt return Brown takes is another chance for an injury.
- The Steelers have signed Tajh Boyd. Boyd was drafted by the Jets in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. This is nothing more than a depth move and personally don't see him making it onto the 53-man roster.
- As most have predicted, the Titans appear to have interest in Jason Worilds. according to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean. According to Dianna Marie Russini of NBC 4, the Eagles also plan on pursuing the linebacker. Joel Corry of CBSSports.com believes that Worilds should be asking for $10.75 per year and believes that he will end up with a contract around 5 years 53.75 million.
- Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com has reported that the Eagles may be interested in signing Brice McCain. For my thoughts on McCain and Worilds make sure to check the link at the beginning of this post.
- According to Adam Caplan of ESPN, the Steelers have shown interest in CB Cary Williams. Obviously he would be a great fit for the team, however, I do not see the move as something that will likely happen. I think the team will attempt to fix the secondary issues with the draft.
- Scott Brown of ESPN.com explained that Troy Polamalu is still unsure about his future. While he may be uncertain, the Steelers are not and are hoping that Polamalu retires. There is no scenario I can imagine where he returns to the the team at this point.
- While most expect Le'Veon Bell to be suspended for the first two games of the season, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is reporting that Bell could be suspended for up to 4 games. Obviously this would be horrible news for the Steelers and increases the necessity to find a strong backup for Bell this offseason.
- Former Steeler Mike Wallace is interested in rejoining the Steelers, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. It makes very little sense for the Steelers to entertain this idea. Between the lack of cap space and the improvements shown by Bryant and Wheaton, the return of Wallace would be a detriment to the team's offseason plans.
- Earlier this week the Marcus Gilbert restructured his deal with the team Mike Mitchell has done the same. Markice Pouncey may be the next. Given the team's cap issues, these types of moves were expected. The problem, however, is that this will not fix the team's long term problems, it just delays them. And the constant restructuring of deals is part of the cause of the team's cap concerns.
- Jason Worilds plans on testing free agency, according to Scott Brown. While it would be great to keep Worilds, he may be easier to replace than some of the other possible holes on the Steelers' roster.
